How to Make Decorative Pillows

Sujata Iyer
Sometimes, something as simple as decorative pillows can transform the overall décor of your home to a great extent. You need to decide the location and theme and when that is done, you can create the look as you wanted.
If there's one thing that can make someone happy about themselves, it is watching something that they have created being put to good use. It is the same with interior decoration. When you see that your home reflects choices you have made, you feel nice about it and about yourself.
From the color of the walls to the fabric of the couch. Even tiny details like the decorative pillows on the couch or on the bed are a testament to the thought that has gone into the things that you have carefully picked out. And while we may love to exhaust our creative and monetary resources on interior decorating, we can't really afford it at all times.
So here, we have some ideas on how you can make decorative pillows that don't cost the earth. Use them and give your home a stunning makeover.

Step 1: Decide the Location

◆ The first thing that you have to do is decide for which part of your home you want to make the pillows.
◆ Is it for a bed or is just a set of throw pillows for your couch that will help with the overall theme that you have in mind? This is because the size and style of the pillow will definitely depend on where the pillow is going to be placed.

Step 2: Decide the Theme

◆ The next step, after you have decided where to place the pillows is coming up with a theme for the pillows. It should generally match with the rest of the decor of the room.
◆ For instance, if your entire house has an ultra-modern look, with lava lamps and sheer curtains, then having a set of throw pillows with a monochrome effect makes more sense than having oriental themed pillows. The same applies to bedroom pillows. In vintage theme, you can use retro style prints and floral cushions and match them with canvas and paintings.

Step 3: Gather the Material

◆ After you have decided the theme, you have an idea of what material you need. The basic range of materials is fabric, a sewing machine, scissors, measuring tapes, pins, cotton or pillow stuffing in any other material.
◆ Using simple fabric for making pillows makes more sense, because the pillow is going to be covered with another cover anyway. So gather all these materials and set up a strong table to make the pillows.

Step 4: Make the Pillows

◆ Measure the fabric according to the size that you want the pillow to be.

◆ For a bed, the pillow will be rectangular and a throw pillow is generally square.
◆ Place the fabric on the table and place the stuffing in the center of the fabric. Place the stuffing in such a way that you can easily mold the final pillow into the desired shape.
◆ Now, fold the fabric from one side onto the stuffing and hold it there. Then, from the opposite side, pull the fabric in such a way that it overlaps the first fold. Pin these up once they are in the desired position.
◆ Remove the stuffing. Take one open side and sew the mouths together. Then, fill the stuffing inside and sew the other end shut.

◆ Next, remove the pins and hem each flap on its own side. This is for a throw pillow. For a bed pillow, you just need to sew one end, stuff it and sew the other end up. Your pillow is ready.
◆ Once your pillows are ready, you need to cover them up with appropriate covers. Use some fancy pillow covers to give them a stylish look. Have fun!
