It's 2020! Why Not Start a Fun, New Hobby?

Mikkie Mills
Everyone needs a hobby of some sort, but not everyone knows off-hand which exact hobbies they would like to get involved with. There really are limitless options out there, but we can come up with a few ideas to help get you started thinking at the very least. Here are five, great options for a new hobby you can start right now.

Coding

In today's modern world, everything is starting to come with some sort of computerization included. This is all courtesy of coding, or the ability for someone to write instructions for a computer program in programming language. Getting started in basic code is surprisingly easy and can even quickly lead to you making your own apps, programs, and more.
For those interested in dipping their toes into this fun and potentially very profitable hobby choice, Khan Academy and Code.org are two, reputable and cost-free code-teaching authorities worth looking into.

Geocaching

If you're unfamiliar with the term "geocaching", this fairly new hobby combines exploration, GPS coordination, and treasure discoveries all into one, single, fun pursuit. Essentially, people all over the world hide various items and then provide clues and GPS coordinates online for others to subsequently use in order to seek out and find those hidden goods.
There are many clubs, competitions, and other events setup surrounding this great one for the family and solo treasure hunter alike.

Reading

If you really think about it, reading is a sort of master hobby over all hobbies, as you can learn and gain valuable insights into all other hobby choices and skill-sets via this one, single act. Grab a book about fishing or finally learn those tailoring tricks and discover if you really can mend that fleece fabric jacket that's been tucked away for so long.
If it's not your intention to buy every book you read, your local library is an unparalleled resource for borrowing books and typically without cost. For help finding a library near you or any other information on library offerings you may find helpful, the American Library Association is a great resource to get in touch with.

Jarring/Canning

Whether for reasons of thriftiness, pleasure, or both, canning, or jarring as it is sometimes called, can provide some truly satisfying hobby time. With canning, you can take some of your favorite foods and preserve them inside vacuum-sealed jars for later consumption. Combined with a hobby like gardening, this one can really become immersive.
The actual process of canning works through heat being applied to the food-filled jar which then causes air to escape and pull down a food-safe, self-sealing lid onto the jar. Foods that are normally quick to expire can then last, in some cases, indefinitely.

Exploring/Traveling

Those looking for more "out and about" in their routines can certainly find an unlimited supply by taking up the hobby of travel. If you are interested in history, consider planning and taking your own traveling tour of a specific historic theme or storyline in time. If you enjoy seeing tall buildings, plot a course for seeing the country's tallest builds.
Many people even find near limitless possibilities in exploring the abundance of national parks across the US. The National Park Service is a great resource to confer with in this particular pursuit as well as many others involving nature, wildlife, and conservation.
Hobbies are great for us all, and these five options represent just a small slice of the possibilities you can give a try at any given time. Don't just sit at home and scroll that screen mindlessly. Get up, get moving, and try out a new hobby or two today.
